How to Replace an audi a3 keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

Ford-New.pngIf this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car key replacement audi can start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially if they're an Bosch model like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

holding-car-keys-woman-in-formal-clothesA faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your car. It is a crucial part of the Audi's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is spinning. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a common component across the audi q7 replacement key 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
